Introduction
When we communicate with someone we unconsciously go through a simple routine. We identify them, clarify our message, decide how to communicate it, do it and then assess whether it's been received, understood and acted on.
There are times when we communicate instinctively, without a thought or care for the complexity of the process. And there are times when we struggle to get the words out and convey what we mean.
Why do people:
fail to talk or write sense?
fail to say what they mean?
fail to hear what is said?
fail to understand what is said?
fail to act on the message?
So often the effort and time put into communication is wasted and objectives aren't met. Poor or failed communications in a business sense mean money is wasted and profits are diminished; in organisational terms there is a gulf between the organisation and its audiences; in a personal sense there will be frustration and a loss of worth. And that's just a very brief list of the consequences of bad communication.
The remedy for poor communication starts with one person who is ready and willing to:
set time aside to develop their personal communication skills
explore and understand the dynamics of interpersonal behaviour
adopt a framework for all their communications
daily implement the principles of good communication
It can start with one person who can get a vision for what quality communication can do for them and their organisation - the person who can enthuse their colleagues and instigate a new culture of quality communication in their organisation.
Whether you are that person, or you've been sent along by that person, WELCOME.
We are in for a good day.
This first section takes a detailed look at the communication process. It's foundational. When you understand the process and apply it to all your communications you'll see a marked improvement in the quality of your communication with those around you. You will literally be generating knowledge that in turn will help you generate a wealth of benefits for you and your organisation. I'm talking about much more than money!
The process is simple and highly adaptable. You are already using it unconsciously. What I'm going to do is help you apply it consciously as you prepare, target and deliver your messages. You'll be much more effective, achieving quality communication.
